Terms of service
1. What the service is
folder.host is private file storage. Files are encrypted on your device, split into pieces and kept with other members. If you have home storage, its spare space holds encrypted pieces of other people's files, and this counts towards your plan. The site manages your account and shows the state of your devices. The site does not take part in storing files.
2. Safety of your files
The service stores every file with a margin and rebuilds missing pieces by itself, but it does not promise that files will never be lost or unavailable. Do not keep the only copy of something whose loss cannot be undone. The estimates on the Compare page are calculations, not a commitment by the service operator.
3. Keys and the recovery password
Encryption keys are created and stored in the app on your device. The service operator has no access to them and cannot recover your files. Losing the recovery password and all your devices means losing the files. Resetting the site password does not recover files.
4. Other people's encrypted pieces on your storage
Home storage running the app holds encrypted pieces of other members' files. Neither you nor the service operator can read them. Do not try to read, change or delete these pieces outside the app. The operator cannot see content, so it handles abuse reports by accounts and devices, and may disconnect a device or close an account. You can report abuse on the Report abuse page or at abuse@folder.host.
5. Acceptable use
- Storing material that breaks the law is forbidden.
- Creating several accounts to pass as different members is forbidden: storage reliability rests on devices being independent.
- Attempts to disrupt the network or other members are forbidden.
6. Payment and non-payment
Plans and prices are on the Pricing page. Payment is taken for the period you choose: a month or a year. The Swap plan counts the space you share towards your storage; the operator does not pay cash for space. If a payment does not arrive, writing new files is closed, reading stays available for 30 days, then the data is deleted. We send an email before each step.
7. Leaving the network
To leave the network, disconnect the device in your account: the app warns the network in advance and hands its pieces to other members. Simply switching a device off reduces the safety margin for everyone. Actions that reduce data or contribution are confirmed on the app page.
8. Limitation of liability
The service is provided “as is”. To the extent the law allows, the service operator is not liable for indirect losses, lost profit or loss of data, and its total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid for the service in the last 12 months. This does not exclude liability that the law does not allow to be excluded.
9. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the law of the country where the service operator is registered. The parties first try to settle disputes by correspondence through support (support@folder.host); if that fails, the dispute goes to the court at the operator's place of registration, unless mandatory consumer protection rules say otherwise.
10. Changes to the terms
We may change these terms. We email you in advance about material changes. If you keep using the service after the changes take effect, they apply to you.
